They didn't choose to be friends, but their friendship was inevitable. They were both abandoned. They both lived in servitude. And they both had a secret to hide. It is 1500 years After the End (A.E.) on Terrah. The Allelon are only a remnant of their glorious past, but they cling to an ancient prophecy’s promise to restore their kingdom and their king. The Emperor and The Cardinal are united in an unholy alliance to destroy the Allelon, their exiled ruler and their prophecy. Caught in the crossfire are two young women auctioned to a ruthless lord. Wynn knows firsthand the atrocities of life on Terrah. She uses common sense and hard work to be reunited with her family. Esa uses beauty and charm to regain all she lost when she was branded and taken from her family. Their unlikely friendship is intertwined for a timeless purpose. What will happen if one falls?

One of my favorite parts of the book is the way Esa and Wynn's friendship develops and grows slowly throughout the book. There was never a jarring point of “now we’re friends” as there sometimes is in stories like this. Rather, as they realized they were friends, so did the reader. It happened bit by bit – as it would in real life. The author did this beautifully. The evil characters throughout the book are clearly bad - all bad. There seemed to be something missing, for me. In my experience, people are complex. I didn’t see the motivation behind their actions. Maybe that’s something book two will dive into more, but I was hoping for some insight within book one.
The character development of both Esa and Wynn is excellent. They both grow realistically throughout the book. It was interesting to see their ways of speaking (mainly using contractions or not) change as they entered different circumstances, too.
As a small note, I love Pax!
Some of the secondary characters were more 2D than they could be. With the main story told from Esa and Wynn’s perspectives, that’s natural, but I did feel their characters could have been developed more. By the end of the book I knew a lot about Wynn and Esa, but very little about many other characters.
I really enjoyed the periodic reveals of characters' pasts (particularly Wynn’s) and the slow disclosing of magical elements throughout the story.
The grammar could use another pair of eyes. In addition, the use of diction within dialog was sometimes distracting. I’m not opposed to making dialog unique like this – in fact, it’s often a very good thing – but sometimes it felt like too much. A distinctive phrase here and there goes a long way.
The ending, while it does lead into book two, felt anticlimactic to me. I was left with a feeling of “wait, what?” It seemed a little rushed, especially since the rest of the book progressed steadily (not too slow, but savoring in the right moments). There is also a point (I’m being vague here in an effort to avoid spoilers) where I had to blink and reread, and I still wasn’t sure I believed it.
The sadder parts in the book were written well. I really felt for the characters as they dealt with what sometimes seemed like struggle after struggle. The emotions they feel are universal, and I appreciate the way the author handled them.
If One Falls has a lot of potential. The plot is one I haven’t seen done often, and I appreciate the focus on friendship, rather than romance. The book could use another round of edits, though, and the ending could come to a more satisfying close.

If One Falls The Books of Allelon Volume 1 Elaine H Baldwin 9780989366403 Books Reviews
The story is about two young women who are caught in a war between the Emperor and the Cardinal and Allelon, the exiled true king of Terrah.
Esa is young, beautiful, and selfish. She trains to someday be the bride of a rich man. But little does she know what that life will really entail. Wynn is her companion, a woman of sense and duty, and bearer of a secret She is part of the Allelon family. When Esa is auctioned off to the highest bidding rich man to become his future wife, the women discover that he killed his previous wives and plans on leaving Wynn (Esa’s companion) at a temple to become a temple prostitute.
So the women run. While running, they stumble upon a community that exists outside Terrah, a community filled with magic. It seems like an idyllic village filled with peace and communion between the inhabitants. Then Wynn discovers that someone in the village has used magic to suppress her and Esa’s memories, replacing them instead with false memories.
I enjoyed If One Falls. It is not the usual medieval fantasy. Instead, the story takes place in a fantasy world that feels more like the 1800′s. I liked how it was a different kind of world. I also enjoyed the characters, especially Wynn. She is a no-nonsense, get things done kind of woman. And she is (most of the time) patient with Esa.
And speaking of Esa, usually characters like her (young, beautiful, naive, selfish) can annoy me, but Esa did not. Instead, I saw her the way Wynn did, as someone who need protection and guidance.
I recommend If One Falls for anyone looking for a fantasy novel.
I loved this book, couldn't put it down. I am anxiously awaiting the second book. I look forward to reading this again when the next one is available..
Although this is a genre that I usually don't read, I thoroughly enjoyed it! If you're a fantasy reader I encourage you to read it.
A very good read! I haven't been able to get my nose out of the book! It has a 1800 feel to it. But also fantasy. Absolutely amazing. It's a must read!
This book is an imaginative wonder. But I guess I'm just not very bright. I just don't get it. I haven't looked, but I can see the reviews wondrous, lyrical, poetic, and on from there. I found magic, talking animals, and a longing for truth.
The problem is that I never found that truth in this book. The bad guys were nasty, but what were they doing and why? I have no idea.
I guess I'm not part of the audience for this one
A little slow.....had trouble getting into it. I usually like this genre so will need to pursue it and see if it ends well.
