I'd been hearing a lot about how suspenseful and thrilling this book was, and so I was eager to read it. So eager that I purchased a copy from overseas before it was published in the US. I was rather disappointed. I'm not sure if the translation was poor or if the source material was the problem, but the writing was awkward and jarring -- not in a "experimenting with language" way, but in a "straight translation from French, no matter how strange" way. I had also heard the bare bones of the story -- that a young woman was abducted and held captive, and I assumed that was the bulk of the story, but that situation is resolved fairly early on. The story was just not that compelling or interesting, and the translation problems just made it worse.Product details

Alex Omnibus Italian Edition edition by Pierre Lemaitre S Vivian Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
"Alex" has the three things you might want from a crime thriller.
It urges you to turn to the next page,to read on to find out what will happen, while at the same time you do not want tp read it too quickly so you can savour the story and the subtleties.Nothing is certain, nothing is what it at first seems to be.
It makes you "sympathetique" to the main character,Alex.
It tells you something about the human condition.
In the end,as the story unravels, you feel a terrible pity for the main character, and a feeling of outrage at the cruelties of which Mankind is capable. In that sense,it is not just a thriller, but a powerful novel, and one which owes something to Dostoevsky.
In my youth I was enthralled by Simenon's novels.both the Maigret stories and the others, and Lemaitre is a worthy successor to Simenon. My only quibble with the book is that the three main policemen involved, who I understand will be featured in future works, are somewhat typecast-the sad loner whose wife was murdered, the young bright spark who knows everything etc, whilst one of the originalities of Simenon's books was the very ordinariness and contentment of his main character.Perhaps as an indication of the crueller more nihilistic times in which we live, the plot and shocking details of Lemaitre's work could never have featured when Simenon was writing. This is a bleak and scary Paris with hotels with no employees, not the Paris of boulevard cafes and friendly concierges to which Simenon paid homage.
Despite the above caveat on characterisation,I still recommend this as the finest work of crime fiction I have read for many a year.
